Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
Alpha Xi Delta college chapters and alumnae associations promote understanding and acceptance of autism and raise and funds by participating in various Autism Speaks Walk events across the country and holding AmaXIng Challenges at our host institutions. With 1 in 54 children diagnosed with autism and no known cure, Alpha Xi Deltas are committed to improving the lives of children and families affected by autism.
What is autism?
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. There are many types of autism caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism.
Autism’s most-obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Some developmental delays associated with autism can be identified and addressed even earlier. Autism Speaks urges parents with concerns to seek evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.

The Delta Psi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta is excited to bring Autism Speaks to the Texas State campus community. The world's largest autism advocacy organization, Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Our Sisters look forward to increasing autism awareness on our campus and working with Autism Speaks. With one in 150 children diagnosed with autism and no known cure, Alpha Xi Delta is committed to improving the lives of children and families affected by autism. We hope our fundraising and awareness efforts can help put one more piece of the autism puzzle in place. Every semester we hold philanthropy events supporting Autism Speaks like a pancake breakfast called Xi Hop or a spaghetti dinner called Xiti with the Xi's! Every fall we not only hold our own philanthropy event, but our sisters also help with the local Autism Walk in San Antonio, Texas!
